The biggest event in promotional history, to date, has had some big match ups announced.
Conor McGregor is on yet another big card in a yet another big main event. This time it’s a rematch against his last opponent. A man who stopped the Irish hype train in his tracks and was not “surprised” he did so. The mans name? Nate Diaz.
The two will lock horns in a welterweight match up some five or so months after their UFC 196 encounter. There will be no short notice questions. This time each man will have a FULL CAMP to prepare for the other.
Before McGregor tries to avenge his only UFC loss two men who have been lobbying for a shot at the featherweight gold will do battle to crown an interim champion. Josè Aldo and Frankie Edgar will meet for the second time in what is expected to be an extremely exciting affair. In a former champion vs. former champion (different weight classes), Edgar will get the opportunity to avenge his only featherweight loss at the hands of Aldo.
A full list of fights announced for the July 9 card is below.
Cat Zingano has an opponent for her first fight in over a year.
The one time title challenger Cat Zingano has not been seen inside the octagon since her loss to Ronda Rousey last year. Since that time Zingano has healed some injuries and learnt some new tricks.
Zingano is set to face TUF winner Julianna Pena at UFC 200. Dave Meltzer was the first to break the news on Thursday.
A winner of her last 9 coming into the Rousey bout Zingano (9-1) tasted her first defeat at the hands of the former champion and has since expressed how “excited” she is to get to show off what she has learned in this past year. With UFC wins over Amanda Nunes and current champion Miesha Tate, “The Alpha Cat” could be catapolted back into title contention with a win over the forner TUF winner.
Pena (7-2) is coming off a win over Jessica Eye at UFC 192 last October. Undefeated since winning TUF 18, Pena holds wins over Miliana Dudieva and the above mentioned Eye. A certain future star, Pena is getting a huge jump up in competition and a win over Zingano will most certainly help her case for a future title shot.
Former middleweight champion Anderson Silva wants to fight featherweight King Conor McGregor.
Next in action at UFC 198, Anderson Silva the former long time middleweight champion has called for a fight with Conor McGregor.
Currently on media duty in Brazil to promote his UFC 198 meeting with Uriah Hall, Silva dropped an almighty bombshell while talking to reporters.
I would like to do a rematch with Nick Diaz and then Michael Bisping. And the challenge that I would like to have in my career would be cut down in weight and fight McGregor.
I would have to talk to (UFC general manager) Giovani Decker about which weight we can do this fight at, but it’s a challenge i would like. He offers me a big challenge, something I’m looking for in my martial knowledge right now.
Silva fought the majority of his career at 185-pounds, where he reigned supereme for many years. He made three trips up to 205 and had the same crushing victories over top light heavyweight fighters. Now, “The Spider” would cut down to 180 in order to face McGregor.
His fighting style. He’s an electric, versatile athlete, and I believe his game can surprise many people, like it did already. I think he’s a great fighter and a smart man.
While this is currently all fantasy match making I’m sure the UFC ‘brass’ have caught wind of Silva’s comments and mouths are most certainly watering.
Miesha Tate wants third crack at Ronda Rousey but questions the former champions mental state.
This rivalry has been one of the most covered in the sport. Miesha Tate and Ronda Rousey’s ‘beef’ dates back to when they first met inside the Strikeforce cage in 2012. They also met at UFC 168 and on both nights it was the “Rowdy” one who had her hand raised after two armbar submissions ended the fights.
Now we are in 2016 and Miesha Tate is the UFC bantamweight champion. The former Strikeforce champion stunned Holly Holm with a fifth-round submisison earlier this month in what was Holm’s first title defence after she beat Rousey last November.
Since her victory, Miesha Tate has been doing the usual rounds with media and on Monday sat down with Maxim Magazine where she spoke about her interest in getting a third fight with Ronda Rousey.
I’m very confident. I was telling everyone that Ronda Rousey is not this unbeatable woman and everyone was like, ‘You’re crazy’ then Holly Holm went out there and kicked her head off, and I was like ‘See? I told you she was only human.’ Then I went out there and choked out Holly. It just goes to show that on any given day someone can go out there and win fights. I want to go out there and I want to rematch her.
During the Holly Holm and Ronda Rousey fight the former boxing champion showed the world and the rest of the division how to beat the once considered ‘unbeatable’ Rousey. Tate, just like the Millions who watched Rousey go down at UFC 193, has the blue print to beat her old foe.
Well, you know obviously there’s exploiting her holes in her game. She’s been exposed, for sure. I really question her mentality. I know whenever I’ve been put through any kind of adversity or come back from a loss the first thing I want to do is get back in the gym and get better. That’s not what I heard from her. I have yet to hear ‘Oh, I just want to get back in the gym and get better.’
She said she wants to have kids with Travis Browne. I don’t know where her mind is with everything.
Immediately after Miesha beat Holm UFC President Dana White announced that it would indeed be Rousey who would get first crack at Miesha’s bantamweight gold but according to Tate she’s not aware of who’s next.
I don’t know who’s going to be next. I still have to talk to the UFC.
Things are sure to get very interesting as we have learned when these two ladies are set to compete against one another it makes for interesting viewing and reading.
Fedor Emelianenko has stated he wants a rematch with UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum.
Former Pride FC heavyweight Fedor Emelianenko made a successful return to MMA late in 2015 when he beat Jaideep Sing in Japan.
Since his return fight many questions have been asked about Fedor and the quality of his future opponents. Well the ‘Last Emperor’ answered those questions himself in a recent interview with EpicMMA.
According to Emelianenko he is very interested in a rematch with UFC heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum.
I would like to have a rematch with Fabricio Werdum. I told the UFC that I want and would accept that fight.
I have been asked about the UFC a lot. Our doors are open and we are talking about it. Maybe it will happen in the future.
Werdum and Emelianenko met back in 2010 in the main event of Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum. The current UFC heavyweight King was victorious via submission after being rocked and dropped. Now six years on Fedor still believes he has what it takes to beat the man who ended his 28-fight win streak.
With talks said to have been ongoing between team Fedor and the UFC, details are currently not clear. One thing for certain, if Fedor signs with the UFC the MMA world is sure to implode with excitement.
Cat Zingano would like to fight Miesha Tate one more time.
It’s been well over a year since we saw Cat Zingano in the Octagon. Her last outing was a loss to the then champion Ronda Rousey.
Since the loss Zingano has used the time wisely by both healing her injuries and travelling to some of the worlds greatest MMA gyms and academies.
The former title challenger appeared on Friday nights episode of inside MMA on axstvto discuss where she’s been, who she wants to fight and what’s next.
I had some pretty big bumps and bruises I had to take care of as far as physically. And just on a personal note, I’m doing all of this for me and my son and that gives me a little more responsibility than all these other people have to deal with. I just worked a lot on the mental aspect of it all.
I took a trip to Thailand and visited a whole bunch of Gyms I’ve always wanted to train and learn technique and education from people I really look upto. I feel I’ve improved 110% and I’m ready to go out there and showcase it.
Going into the title bout with Rousey Zingano was both undefeated in the UFC and in her career. With wins over Amanda Nunes and the current bantamweight champion Miesha Tate to her name all signs are pointing to a future title shot again with a win in her Octagon return. Although Zingano would immediately like to fight Miesha, the UFC has other ideas and has booked her against a yet to be named opponent.
Being that I’ve had a year off they (UFC) wanted to have a tuneup fight. The fight that I want the most is clearly Miesha. Seeing her win the fight and the fashion in which she won the fight defiently put a fire in my spirit to get back out there and fight her.
When I blew my knee I had just beaten Miesha and Miesha off a loss to me was still handed my title shot. Obviously that’s the fight I want but I’m not looking passed this opponent, this is a very valid opponent and it’s gonna be an exciting fight.
I can’t wait for what you guys get to see because when this is announced you are gonna be [excited].
Zingano may have not have given much away in terms of details but she did mention that the fight would be at the start of summer. Also stating that her birthday was July 1st and the fight would either be “a late or early birthday present” all signs are pointing to a UFC 199 or UFC 200 comeback for Zingano.
As far as an opponent for “The Alpha Cat”, Invicta FC champion Cris Cyborg has been linked with a UFC 199 bout but both promotions have yet to confirm or deny those rumours. Holy Holm may also be an option seeing as, according to Dana White, Ronda Rousey will get first crack at new champion Miesha Tate.
UFC 199 and UFC 200 take place on June 4 and July 9 respectively.
Nate Diaz loves the fact that he shut Conor McGregor’s mouth.
As I’m sure we are all aware Nate Diaz came in to fight Conor McGregor on just 11 days notice. Not only did he show up but he shocked the world and stopped the featherweight King.
After a big first round that saw McGregor dominate the exchanges and cut Nate up it was the second round that turned into the Diaz show. Stockton’s own found his range and got super comfortable, taunting and showboating while landing big shots. After a flush 1-2 combination landed on McGregor’s chin the end came soon after. Diaz stuffed a sloppy takedown attempt from a badly hurt McGregor, reversed and ended up sinking in a RNC which brought McGregor to tap.
Since the fight, Diaz has skyrocketed and become even more popular than before. Noticeably doing more media work, Diaz recently spoke with Fox Sport about the build up to UFC 196, a prank he pulled minutes before facing Conor and more.
It felt good to wrap up that week you know. A week full of anxiety and all that sh*t.
