There may be some fighters who will not agree with Dana White’s latest fantasy match making.
Nate Diaz had one of the performances of his career this past Saturday night at UFC 196. After submitting UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor in the second round of their welterweight main event. Word on the street was that if McGregor beat Diaz he would go onto possibly challenge welterweight king-pin Robbie Lawler.
Speaking at a UFC 196 post fight show with ESPN.com, Dana White dropped a possible bombshell.
You know what would make a lot of sense? This isn’t the fight I’m making, I’m just saying, Diaz and Robbie Lawler would make a lot of sense. His brother beat Lawler. Robbie’s now the world champion and Nate became very, very popular tonight. We’ll see what happens with Nate, but listen, for me to try and predict what one of the Diaz brothers is going to do? Who knows?
The fantasy match making done by White seems to have reached UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertita and he seems to not only agree with White but would like to see the fight himself.
It seems that Nate will get “the push” that he wants from the promotion. A fight with Robbie Lawler is a huge deal. Though the likes of Tyron Woodley, Stephen Thompson and Rory Macdonald may not like it if this fight materializes due to the fall out after rumours of the McGregor, Lawler bout started circulating.
Diaz did have a stint at 170-pounds and the one thing that was made crystal clear was that he (Diaz) was much smaller and found himself being manhandled by the likes of MacDonald. Now, we all now how tough Nate is and the Lawler fight would be something to witness.
The next 7-10 days will shed a lot of light onto not just this fight but what we may or may not see at UFC 200 in July.
