Last month it was announced that Chris Leben would be coming out of retirement to sign with Bellator MMA. Unfortunately due to a heart condition it may be more than just Leben’s promotional debut at jeapordy. His career or life are also at risk.
Leben confirmed the news to MMAFighting.com in an email.
Not gonna be able to make a comeback in Bellator at least for the foreseeable future. I’m in good spirits. I feel great. Unfortunately, the heart issue has sidelined me.
The condition? Well according to Leben’s management, who sent a statement to MMAjunkie.com with out Leben being aware, the former UFC and TUF standout has a “life-threatening” heart abnormality. Results verified after more than one EKG exam.
Scott Coker has since released a statement on the devastating news.
We are saddened to hear of Chris Leben’s current health situation and would have loved to see him compete inside the Bellator cage. A fighter’s health and safety is of the outmost importance to us as an organisation. We wish Chris the best in his future endeavours and we are happy to help provide a platform for him to share his story with people around the world.
For the die hard MMA fan this is emotional news. Leben was a huge fan favourite through out his career thanks to his go-for-broke and never give up style of fighting. The numerous comeback victories made “The Crippler” become adored around the world.
A Chris Leben comeback was much needed and with Lady Luck on side, it may still happen.
